Cruising has seen major changes over the years.  The range is from huge busy ships that cater to families and passengers looking for “lots to do” - small boutique vessels with a more leisurely ambiance - sailboats - to river and canal barges.  The itinerar­ies vary from ambitious to slow and leisurely and can take you to all corners of the world.  All size ships have moderate to first class to luxury choices.  Along with the many choices there are just as many special price offers. Group cruising has become very popular.  Any individual can sign up for a group departure - take advantage of the special pricing and amenities associated with the group - and in many cases have transportation to the pier or to the airport included.  On board the ship you are free to be on your own or to join others on the many activities and dining arrangements.

Escorted tours vary tremen­dously - from the very “struc­tured” tour for the person who likes the safety of not having to make any choices and decisions to the “unstructured” for the indi­vidual who prefers more personal choices and free time. Tours range from moderate to first class to deluxe to luxury.   Many times this is the suggested way to travel for the greatest value.  For instance - Tauck Tours - one of the deluxe tour operators (and my personal favorite) has not raised their rates on their 2008 European Tours despite the fact that the dollar has declined from the euro since the tours had been priced a year ago.  Tauck offers deluxe motor­coach tours - motorcoach and rail combination tours - motorcoach with either cruiseship, barge or sail­ing vessel combinations - adventure tours such as helicopters and hik­ing over the Canadian Rockies - Premier Events such as the Kentucky Derby or the Rosebowl Parade - and Family Adventures called “Bridges” a very successful series geared for the entire family - popular with children - parents and grandparents alike - a wonder­ful way to share time and bond as a family.  Two new features this year  with Tauck Tours are speicial departure dates that are limited to only 26 passengers and specially designated tour dates that do not have a single supplement - a great advantage to the person who is traveling alone.  Several luxury tour operators keep their group sizes very small on all departures. Just as with cruising there are times that you can take advantage of a group departure and receive additional amenities.
