Facial fillers are injections which fill out wrinkled or uneven areas of the face. The most common areas treated are the nasolabial folds ( the area from the nose to the mouth) , lips, cheeks and chin, backs of hands and the area between the eyebrows( glabella) They include Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Sculptra, Radiesse, and even your own tissues taken from another part of the body.
Many of us notice fine lines or wrinkles developing on the face in our thirties. These are often the result of muscular activity or thinning of our own collagen.
Most of the products used to fill wrinkles and lines are hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that helps to hydrate and add volume to your skin. Hyaluronic acid does not require pre-testing and provides longer lasting and more reliable results.
Restylane and Juvederm are typically broken down over time but Radiesse is believed to persist as it contains calcium. Restylane lasts up to six months where Juvederm is FDA approved to last up to a year and Radiesse will last up to one year.
Restylane is better for more superficial wrinkles and lines while Juvederm, Perlane and Radiesse are better for moderate and deeper wrinkles and folds. For areas of large volume loss, Sculptra works best.
Treatment with injectables typically takes fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on the amount of areas treated. Injections can cause some discomfort which is usually alleviated by icing the area first or in some cases providing local anesthesia. The filler is injected with a fine needle and small amounts can make for dramatic results.
The best results sometimes require a combination of fillers. In a person with deep nasolabial folds with superficial fine wrinkles, a combination of Radiesse or Juvederm for deep wrinkles with Restylane for the more superficial lines would provide the best result.
Side effects of injectables includes, redness, bruising, swelling and bumps, and are temporary. The results are immediate and the majority of individuals are able to return to normal activity the next day at the latest.
Some areas such as around the eyes and forehead would also benefit from added Botox treatments that does not fill the wrinkles but weakens the muscles that cause the wrinkles.
Cost is based on the amount of filler necessary to achieve the results you want, but can range from $400.00 to $3000 dollars depending on the filler and the volume of filler used.
