Shawna Schenk, local college writing professor, has started a new trend—playing on the craze of Myspace and Facebook, the emerging non-profit organization, The University of the Green (www.universityofthegreen.org) has (for the first time in the world) provided an outlet for people (of all ages) to connect together to help support environmental protection causes and raise awareness on the going green lifestyle.
Schenk shares, “I saw the millions of people throughout the world become addicted to blogging on outlets like Myspace, Twitter, and Facebook, and wondered, if people (as young as ten and as old as ninety) can become addicted to creating profiles and blogging to their friends, why can’t people become addicted to creating profiles and blogging about something meaningful [like global warming] and positively impact the world?”
The University of the Green allows users to blog for a good cause. The website allows people to sign up (for free) and create a green profile (a dorm room) so they can blog about ways to go green and promote green events going on. It also offers green e-books addressing ways to live eco-friendly in every facet of life (including books on how to throw a “green” wedding or have a “green” sex life).
Not only does the UniversityoftheGreen.org promote eco-friendly actions online, it helps spread environmental awareness on communities on ground through events and fundraisers. This 100% non-profit organization is dedicated to promoting awareness, education, and action on global environmental issues both on and off-line, so as Schenk believes, “the notion of “going green” eventually diminishes so eco-friendly living is no longer a movement but just a part of everyday life…”
As an emerging nonprofit organization, the website is in dire need of members to “enroll” in the university (that is create a green profile and recruit others to join).
The organization also needs volunteers, sponsors, and donations. Please contact Shawna Schenk at 609-377-4264 or email her at universityofthegreen@universityofthegreen.org![]()
